Birthday
My LA birthday (or birth month, as D. likes to call it) celebrations have come to a close, but overall turning 29 for the 4th time has been a lot of fun.
We started the festivities the night before my birthday, by going out for dinner at Yamashiro, this elaborate old-Hollywood Japanese restaurant up in the Hollywood hills. This place sits on 7 acres of land (can't even imagine what it must be worth at this point) and was originally some sort of gentlemen's club for the Hollywood elite, but turned into a high-end Japanese restaurant around the 40's.
The views far outstrip the food. We had a choice between a view overlooking all of Hollywood or a table in the interior courtyard. I felt that the beautiful courtyard, although a little Disney-esque, was much preferable to spending an evening looking at the neon Scientology sign.
The food was good, although not really worth the four-star prices, in my opinion. The only thing worth noting was that D. actually convinced me to eat "real" sushi (i.e. raw fish) by serving yellowtail heavily disguised by mango, macadamia nuts, toasted coconut and soy paper in something called a "Hawaii Five-O" roll. Seriously un-authentic but...yum!
My actual birthday fell on a Monday night, so we kept that low-key and just wandered into town for dinner at our favorite little Asian noodle place.

However, my office was the site of much celebration! My team all conspired and managed to trick me into a surprise birthday lunch, after which I returned to my office to find it completely decked out & looking like someone had robbed a flower shop. I got huge, beautiful bouquets from my team, my little brother (the one to the right of me in the picture) one of my girlfriends at work, and (of course) my darling husband. On top of that, my team had covered the place with balloons and streamers, so the whole thing was just an explosion of festivities.
Then, to wrap the whole thing up, D. rounded up 24 (!) of our closest friends and threw me a birthday brunch at The Courtyard restaurant over in West Hollywood. It was jolly, crowded and chaotic, but our waiter took us all in stride & we had a great time.
